FCL vs LCL: which sea freight option should you choose?
When a full container beats a shared one — and how to decide based on volume, cost and risk.
What FCL and LCL mean
FCL (Full Container Load) means you book an entire container for your cargo. LCL (Less than Container Load) means your goods share a container with other shippers and are consolidated and deconsolidated en route.
The break-even point
As a rule of thumb, once your cargo reaches roughly 13–15 CBM, FCL often becomes as cheap as — or cheaper than — LCL, while reducing handling and risk.
- Choose FCL for larger volumes, fragile or high-value goods
- Choose LCL for small shipments and flexible timing
- Consider FCL to minimize touch points and damage risk
